In 1934, the Water Conservancy Group of the National Northwest Agriculture and Forestry College was established, and in 1939 it was renamed to be the Department of Agricultural Water Conservancy of the National Northwest Agricultural College, which opened the course "Hydrology" at that time, and in 1941 it was approved for graduate admissions, and began to train students of Hydrology and Water Resources. In 1985, the major of "Water Resources Planning and Utilization" for undergraduate students was opened, and in 1998, it was renamed to be "Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering". For more than 30 years, based on conditions of the western arid regions of China as well as the whole country, this major has actively adapted to the needs of national water conservancy project construction and social and economic development, with the purpose of improving the quality of professional training, adhering to quality education as the core, strengthening the study and training of students' basic theories and basic skills, and paying attention to the cultivation of innovative spirit and practical ability. Based on the doctoral program of Hydrology and Water Resources, Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, and Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering, the national key discipline of Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering, and the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering in Arid and Semiarid Areas, Ministry of Education, the close combination of production, education and research has regional advantages in hydrological calculation, water conversion mechanism and sustainable utilization and management of water resources in arid areas, forming a combination of surface water and groundwater, aiming to solve the problems of hydrological analysis and agricultural water resources system regulation and efficient utilization in arid areas, and implementing innovative and composite talent classification training. It has formed the professional characteristics of a diversified and systematic practical teaching system.
The major was selected as the construction site of Featured specialty of Shaanxi province in 2008. It passed the China engineering education certification four times, i.e., in 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2019. In 2019, it was approved as a National First-class Major in 2019.
This major of Hydrology and Water Resource Engineering aims at cultivating innovative and composite senior talents with strong systematic theory of hydrology and water resources engineering, broad knowledge of natural and humanities, are full of pioneering spirit, and can be competent in surveying, evaluation, planning, design, development and utilization, forecasting and forecasting and management of hydrology, water resources and water environment in the fields of water conservancy, agriculture and forestry, ecology, environmental protection, urban construction, land, geology and mining, disaster prevention and mitigation. About five years of graduation, students have the ability to become professional and technical ability of engineers or equivalents, can effectively play a role as a core member or leader in the work team, and develop into an academic elite or industry leader.
Students of this major are trained according to the major category of water conservancy in the first academic year. According to the combination of grades and wishes, students can be transferred in the second semester of the first academic year. In the second academic year, students are trained according to the Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering. According to their wishes, students are classified into two different types, i.e., innovation and composite types, in the sixth semester.
Specialized key courses: Meteorology and Climatology, Physical Geography, Principles of Hydrology, Hydrological Information Collection and Processing, Hydrohydrological and Hydraulic Calculation, Hydrogeology, Hydrological Forecasting, Water Resources Evaluation and Management, Water Resources Utilization Engineering, Water Environment Protection.
