Agricultural Water Conservancy Engineering

Agricultural Water Conservancy Engineering is a traditional major in Northwest A&F University, which was established on the basis of the Shaanxi Water Conservancy Seminar founded by Mr. Li Yizhi (a great master of water conservancy in modern times) in 1932 and the Water Conservancy Group of the National Northwest Agriculture and Forestry College established in 1934. Relying on the national key disciplines of Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering, the National Engineering Laboratory for Crop Efficient Water Use, the National Water-Saving Irrigation of Yangling Engineering Technology Research Center, the Ministry of Education's Modern Water-saving Agricultural Technology Innovation and Wisdom Base of Drought-stricken Area, and the Northwest Water Conservancy & Hydropower Engineering Co., Ltd as well as other scientific research and engineering platforms, it has formed a unified water conservancy, agriculture, civil engineering and management, multidisciplinary knowledge penetration and complementarity, service to agriculture in arid areas, mainly to solve the problem of agricultural water shortage, and has enjoyed a high reputation at home and worldwide.

The major was selected as the Brand Specialty of Shaanxi province in 2003. It was selected as the construction site of the second-class characteristic major of the Ministry of Education in 2007. It was approved as the first-class major of Shaanxi province in 2017, and it was selected as the construction site of national first-class undergraduate major in 2019. Passed the China engineering education certification four times, it is now a key undergraduate major of "double world-class project”.

The major of Agricultural Water Conservancy Engineering aims at cultivating innovative and composite talents with the basic theory, basic knowledge, and basic skills of agricultural engineering and hydraulic engineering, and can engage in the survey, planning, design, construction, research, management and development and utilization of agricultural water conservancy projects in agriculture, water conservancy, hydropower, water conservation, construction and other industries. After about five years of graduation, one is able to become an academic, technical or management backbone in agricultural hydraulic engineering and related fields, and to obtain the title of engineer or have a considerable level of working ability, and to develop into an academic elite or industry leader.

Students of this major are trained according to the major category of water conservancy in the first academic year. According to the combination of grades and wishes, students can be transferred in the second semester of the first academic year. In the second academic year, students are trained according to the agricultural hydraulic engineering. According to their wishes, students are classified into two different types, i.e., innovation and composite types, in the fourth semester. Students are trained according to the direction of their own major in the third academic year.

Specialized key courses: Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Soil and Farming, Engineering Hydrology and Hydraulic Calculation, Water and Soil Resource Planning and Management, Pumps and Pumping Stations, Hydraulic Buildings, Engineering Economics, Hydraulic Reinforced Concrete Structures.
